Launched in 2018, UWS Young Designers is a youth-based fashion design and entrepreneurship program that introduces young people to creative ownership, brand development, and real-world production.
Participants learn that their creativity has value — and that value can be developed, protected, and monetized with intention.
UWS Young Designers provides youth with the opportunity to design original artwork, slogans, patterns, and concepts that may be transformed into real apparel and accessories.
Beyond design, the program introduces participants to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship — including branding, marketing awareness, production timelines, and ethical participation in commerce.
This is not a simulation.
This is an introduction to ownership.
At the heart of UWS Young Designers is a simple but powerful belief:
Creativity has value — and ownership changes futures.
Participants are introduced to the idea that creative work can be monetized ethically and that earnings can be directed toward long-term goals, including financial portfolios and college planning supported by product sales.
The focus is not fast money.
The focus is foundation.
Week 1 — Foundations
Understanding fashion, ownership, and financial literacy.
What is a fashion line? What is a designer? What is income? What is ownership — and why does it matter?
Weeks 2–5 — Design & Brand Development
Participants draft and refine original slogans, artwork, and concepts.
Students also learn how messaging, storytelling, and marketing influence product visibility.
Week 6 — Final Submission
All artwork and concepts are completed and submitted for review.
Week 7 — Presentation & Selection
Digitized designs are presented. Selected designs move forward toward production.
Week 8 — Collection Reveal
New collections and products are unveiled.
(Program length may be adapted for schools or workshops.)
Selected designs may be produced and made available through the UWS Time Collection Store, allowing young designers to see their ideas move from concept to real product.
This process teaches patience, responsibility, and pride — reinforcing that meaningful outcomes take time and care.
Jayden Gomez, a talented 3rd grade student in the Bronx, participated in the UWS Young Designers Summer Workshop Program where he created different designs, two of which are currently on his own products in the Young Designers Collection. As he is now a young entrepreneur, I visited with him and his family to discuss the business/financial component of the program. Check out his collection at www.uwsyoungdesigners.com.
